Literally translated from the word bamboo, it is the natural symbol of wholeness, perseverance and courage in Zen practice. More generally it is seen as a good luck charm. Bamboo has a strong spiritual significance, but it is also the source of many tales.

Japan's oldest folk tale tells the story of Princess Kaguya.
It's the legend of a bamboo cutter who discovers a little princess from the moon inside a bamboo cane. He raises her as his own daughter. Exceptionally beautiful, the little princess eventually met the Emperor. Unfortunately, their love story is impossible, and the princess is forced to return to the people of the Moon. The Emperor will order a letter to be burned at the summit of Mount Fuji, so that his words will reach the Princess. It is from this legend that Japan's most famous mountain takes its name.
